THE 1906 CLUB

West End members visit Crans-sur-Sierre in Switzerland

Dave, Paul and Graham at Crans-sur-Sierrre in Chamonix

Dave Anderson, Paul Hardcastle, Graham Harrison and The Alps

We had booked our family holiday with the Anderson and Hardcastle families in December 2005 for a trip to Chamonix in the French Alps in July 2006 for an all action walking, biking, rafting etc experience. While perusing through the centenary album in the club house Paul spotted Crans (yes the home of the Swiss open) in the 1906 club listing. Research indicated that it would be possible to make an excursion over the French/Swiss border for a day’s golf. We made contact with the Golf Club Crans-sur-Sierre via the web, a hasty and very friendly response extended an invitation for us to take advantage of the privilege of membership of the 1906 centenary alliance. A tee time was booked plus one for the kids to go round the short course. We had a fantastic round; obviously the views are unbelievable although it was a little overcast on the day we were there. The course is set on a high undulating plateau with a back drop view of the Matterhorn range. While it’s true the ball does travel further at high altitude (Dave Rishworth, the West End Pro, had tipped us off), it does make it all the more difficult to find the thing after a wayward shot. It is a day out to be absolutely recommended for any member holidaying in the area. It is easily reached via Geneva using Easyjet. A word of warning for visitors with non golf playing spouses: the course is almost in the centre of the town, and though the round of golf may be free, the shop prices will make any true Yorkshireman wince.
